Registration in Poland – Why is it necessary?

If you are a foreigner planning to stay in Poland, one of the first administrative tasks you may encounter is the requirement for registration (meldunek). For many, this might be something new – especially if you come from a country where this requirement doesn’t exist. So why is registration mandatory in Poland?

What is meldunek?

Meldunek is the official registration of your place of residence or stay with the local authorities. In Poland, the registration requirement applies both to Polish citizens and foreigners staying in the country.

Why is registration needed?

Legal basis for stay
For many foreigners, registration is necessary when applying for legal stay, obtaining a residence card, or a work permit. Authorities often require proof of residence as part of the procedure.

Facilitating contact with authorities
With registration, government agencies know where to send letters, notifications, or decisions. This is important to avoid missing important information, such as regarding legalization, taxes, or social benefits.

Official matters and daily life
Registration may be needed for opening a bank account, enrolling a child in school, receiving medical care, signing a rental contract, or obtaining a PESEL number.

Statistics and planning
For public authorities, data from registrations serve as a source of statistics that help in planning local budgets, infrastructure, schools, public transport, and other services.

How to register?

A foreigner staying in Poland for more than 30 days is required to register their temporary residence. The following is required:

  • An identity document (e.g., passport),
  • A document confirming the right to live at a particular address (e.g., rental agreement),
  • A registration form (available at the office or online).

Registration is free of charge, and the process takes little time.
